In the midst of the butterfly season, learn more about these magnificent insect species that can be spotted in Bulgaria! I prepared this post after my excursion to the Regional Natural History Museum of Plovdiv. Why include it in your list of Plovdiv attractions? It’s the only museum in the country where you can interact with gorgeous butterflies. Learn 5 useful tips before visiting the Regional Natural History Museum of Plovdiv:
Organize a visit

Entrance to the Plovdiv Regional Natural History Museum is every 30 minutes.
The maximum number of visitors is 10 people.
The museum is open every day from 9.00 to 16.30. An adult ticket costs 3 euros and a child one from 0 to 2 euros.
Sometimes it’s possible to visit this one of the fascinating Plovdiv attractions for free. Explore the museum’s Facebook and website.
How to attract butterflies
The Tropic room of the Regional Natural History Museum of Plovdiv recreates the conditions of a tropical jungle (the natural habitat of the species), with the respective temperature, humidity and vegetation.
The whole cycle of butterflies’ breeding takes place in the Tropic room: from pupating to death.
Different butterfly species fly freely among visitors and sometimes the insects alight on the guests. These are the most unforgettable moments of the visit! To attract butterflies the staff suggest focusing on positive emotions.
Take more photos and videos

There are about 20 different butterfly species in the room and it is possible to photograph them or film them with the video camera. In addition to the live specimens in the Regional Natural History Museum of Plovdiv, visitors can also admire the dioramas, which recreate a miniature version of the species’ natural habitats. Sometimes, you can even witness the butterfly cocoons hatch, as I did.
Explore dry-preserved Tropical butterflies
In addition to the unforgettable exhibition of live butterflies, nature lovers can appreciate the rich collection of dry-preserved Tropical butterflies. You can also watch the video of the entire process of metamorphosis that butterflies undergo, from hatching to death. For children, the museum organizes creative educational workshops, where they can create souvenirs inspired by butterflies and then with these creative projects participate in new specially-organized exhibitions.
Share your images

The incredibly friendly and highly knowledgeable staff offer a wonderful educational excursion and encourage guests to share their pictures and reviews on social media.
So, don’t hesitate, support the Regional Natural History Museum of Plovdiv by sharing your positive emotions with others on social media, and, in this way, make your impressions long-lasting!
