Birds diversity in the Pomorie Lagoon
For those seeking the best places to visit in Burgas and beyond, the Pomorie Lake Visitor Centre offers a gateway to the incredible biodiversity of the region, from majestic flamingos to rare migratory birds.
You can visit the centre for free several times a year: on International Birds Day - April 1, Bulgarian Cultural Heritage Day - May 24 and European Heritage Days - September 16-17.
On April 1, International Birds Day, the Pomorie Lake Visitor Centre welcomed hundreds of visitors to celebrate one of the best birdwatching spots in Bulgaria.
With free admission, guided tours, and access to state-of-the-art binoculars and telescopes, the day was a bird lover’s dream.
Guests spotted over 20 species in one weekend, including avocets, golden finches, white wagtails, and even rare sightings like the Eurasian oystercatcher and little bittern.
The Centre also offered live-streamed footage from strategically placed cameras across the lake, giving visitors an intimate look at the birdlife of the Pomorie Lagoon.
And everyone was hopping to spot flamingos - one of the most captivating species in the region.
The best time to observe flamingos by Pomorie Lake
The best time to observe flamingos at Pomorie Lake is from September to March, according to Zoya, an expert tour guide at the Visitor Centre.
During this period, thousands of flamingos gather across the Burgas lakes, which include Pomorie and Atanasovsko.
Since 2013 the number of flamingos in the Burgas region has been increasing. Until recently, Atanasovsko Lake has been the popular choice for flamingos.
But for the last three years, Pomorie Lake is becoming the second home to these highly sociable birds.
According to the recent 47th Midwinter Waterfowl Census, more than 2700 flamingos were recorded at Burgas lakes this season.
These sociable birds have transformed the lake into a vibrant hotspot for birding enthusiasts and nature photographers alike.
